Maid of Honor Speech

For those of you that don’t know me, I am Shannon’s “other half,” or I was until today. You see Shannon is my twin. Today I pass the torch onto Steve to become Shan’s quote on quote “other half.” It’s a bittersweet feeling to pass up that title but I couldn’t have asked for a better guy to take my place. Well, maybe that’s getting ahead of myself, since you see nobody can take the place of a twin. For those of you who are “singles” you probably have no idea what I’m talking about. The bond of a twin is quite special-unique actually. You see Shan knows-even if we are miles apart-when something in my life is upsetting me or something just isn’t quite right and vice versa. Our twin bond will live on forever and today we are blessed to add to this unique bond.

Shan and I have the best relationship. She is my rock, my shoulder to cry on, my partner in crime. Steve and I have more of a love-hate relationship at times. We always know when and how to push each other’s buttons and although he drives me crazy at times-and I know I do the same to him-I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Steve is a big goofball as we all know. He always knows when to crack a joke and makes tough times a little bit easier. I couldn’t have asked for a better brother-in-law. Steve has a huge heart and I’m so glad his heart now belongs to my sister.

Up until Shannon and I were in seventh grade we shared a room. Boy was this a struggle! Her side of the room was always really neat and organized and my side, well let’s just say I wasn’t as organized as her. When we were younger we had different tastes and ideas of how our room should look. First we had a Mickey Mouse themed bedroom. As we grew our room changed a bit too. We stayed with the Disney theme for a bit moving onto Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid.  That’s right. Our parents were so good to let us not have to agree on just one theme-we had two! Shannon loved Belle and I loved Ariel so she had a Beauty and the Beast sheet and comforter set while I had The Little Mermaid. Along with the bed sets we had our own framed pictures of each movie, along with borders. Half of our room was decorated with Beauty and the Beast wallpaper border while the other half was The Little Mermaid. As we got older of course our room changed too. We went from two twin beds to rocking bunk beds! Shan had the top bunk of course, but I was ok with that since I made a fort out of the bottom bunk. One day when we were in Middle School I believe, Shan was taking a shower and I decided I had had enough of the white walls my Mom had picked out years before. So without discussing this with Shannon because hey, remember this is half my room, I opened some outdoor paint and painted my half of the room different colors.  When Shannon got out of the shower she freaked out! I remember she called my Mom and oh boy I was in trouble! Dad was not thrilled, to put it nicely, that I had used outdoor paint on his indoor walls!

Another day after we had some sort of fight about God knows what I remember we took masking tape and made a line down the center of our bedroom. After this “line” was drawn Shannon realized that my half of the room included the closet and door so she made a rule that she was allowed to come on my side but I was never allowed on hers. Sounds totally fair right? The worst thing about sharing a room wasn’t that I couldn’t decorate the room as I wanted. Nope it was that up until probably we were in fourth or fifth grade Shannon couldn’t sleep in the dark. She was afraid. Now if you know me I like to sleep in complete darkness. Well every night I would have to wait for Shannon to fall asleep before I was allowed to turn, not a nightlight off but a lamp on her end table. I kid you not. Every night when she finally fell asleep I would tiptoe over to her light and turn it off. Well almost every night Shannon would wake up the moment I turned off her light. It drove me crazy! I finally learned I couldn’t turn the light off right after she fell asleep. I had to wait a couple of minutes for her to really be in a sound sleep.

Even though we had our differences about our room I couldn’t have asked for a better roommate for all of those years. Steven, congrats on getting a fantastic roommate.

I want to thank Big Steve and Maria for raising such an incredible son. Also a huge shout out to my new sister, Amanda. I couldn’t have asked for a better family to add to Piatelli clan!

Shannon and Steve, congratulations on your marriage! I am so happy for both of you. As Taylor Swift said in her maid of honor speech, “the best parts of your love story are yet to come!”
